With current construction requirements of larger spans and its movements due to thermal expansion, contraction /shrinkage of Post Tension  and initial settlement at site, designers come out with requirements to have larger expansion joints within and between structures and recommend to use slip bearings . Unfortunately many suppliers and trading companies recommend to using conventional rubber in strip or pad forms in low thickness from 10 mm to 20 mm which are normally hand cut – YES HAND CUT – cut by hand from commercially available cheap quality rubber sheets.

These low quality rubber strips or pads will not be sufficient to meet horizontal movement required which are ± 25 to 100 mm or more in some cases. Also as  the horizontal load required will be over 30 % of vertical load only to initiate the movement in a stiff rubber strip where friction coefficient between rubber sheet and concrete are above 30%. On top of it, moving the rubber pad/ strip equal to its thickness laterally, requires, much higher lateral forces,  and in the absence of such load and Nil horizontal movements, over a period of time, the integral internal parts of concrete beam/ floor will start developing internal cracking which will eventually lead to damages over a period of time.

Picture  below show exactly what happened in sites where these cheap quality hand cut commercial rubber sheets are used as well wrongly designed and installed ptfe- teflon bearings.

This phenomina has been reported in many construction sites  bearings to these site was not supplied by POLYMET
